JAPANESE WOODBLOCK CARVER & PRINTMAKER

Mareike Besch is a German-born, London-based artist specialising in traditional Japanese woodblock carving and printmaking. Her work draws on the refined aesthetics of the Edo-period Ukiyo-e tradition, blending meticulous craftsmanship with a contemporary, sustainable approach to design.

Trained in Japan and committed to preserving this centuries-old technique, Mareike explores how cross-cultural practices can form a timeless visual language. Her pieces—often delicate, minimal, and meditative—are designed for small, tranquil interiors, reflecting her belief in the need for harmony in an increasingly compact urban world.

Each artwork is carefully hand-carved and printed using natural pigments, negative space, and time-honoured tools, resulting in objects that are both rooted in tradition and made for the future.
