Crayon rubbing of a Japanese woodblock carved image, framed in an antique wood frame

Traditional Japanese Tattoo Irezumi stands for decoration on the body with mythical beasts, flowers, leaves, and other images from stories, myths and tales. The impetus for the development of the art was the progression of the woodblock prints. Wearing Irezumi is an “aspiration” to life’s goals.

Irezumi is the Japanese word for tattoo. The back of the tattooed girl shows a dense floral pattern, almost like a veil hanging from her shoulders.

After I used black wax crayon to transfer the carving onto thin rice paper.

Black wax crayon rubbing transferred from the carving block ‘Irezumi’ – Dirt & Dust’.

The carving is made from a London sourced cedar wood.

The image is signed by the artist.

The frame is an antique dark wood frame.
